In recent years, the youth on Edisto Island have lacked opportunities to participate in organized sports, due to the lack of local programs and facilities. About a year ago volunteers began programs in basketball, cheerleading, baseball and track, which now involve over 50 children. Most of the participants are from low income families, and attend Jane Edwards Elementary, a Title 1 school, which is the only operating public school on the island.
The Edisto Good Samaritan Clinic has offered free sports physicals to the children participating in the programs. To date about 15 boys and girls have been seen by the Clinic’s healthcare providers. This service has had very positive feedback from the community, while contributing a much needed element in the efforts to create pathways to success for the youth of Edisto.
